U571 Foundations of Systematic Theology II

Course Overview

Building upon the foundations of Course U570, this course delves into the application and consummation of God’s redemptive plan. Students will critically examine the meaning and application of Christ’s death (Soteriology), including the doctrines of election, atonement, and the security of the believer. The course progresses to a study of the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology)—His person, His historical ministries, and His specific work in baptizing, gifting, and filling the believer. Students will then explore the nature, government, ordinances, and worship of the local and universal Church (Ecclesiology). Finally, the course provides a detailed survey of biblical prophecy and future events (Eschatology), including the Tribulation, the Rapture, the Millennial kingdom, and future judgments.

Course Outline:

1. Module 1: Soteriology (So Great a Salvation)
2. The passion of Christ and the meaning/theories of the Atonement.
3. The doctrine of election and the extent of the Atonement.
4. The application and results of salvation, the security of the believer, and the definition of the Gospel.
5. Module 2: Pneumatology (The Holy Spirit)
6. The identity of the Holy Spirit and His work in the Old Testament and the life of Christ.
7. The Spirit’s ministries: indwelling, sealing, baptizing, gifting, and filling.
8. The history of the doctrine of the Spirit.
9. Module 3: Ecclesiology (“I Will Build My Church”)
10. The definition and distinctiveness of the Church.
11. Types of Church government and qualified leadership.
12. The ordinances, worship, and other ministries of the Church.
13. Module 4: Eschatology (Things to Come)
14. Introduction to eschatology and surveys of postmillennialism, amillennialism, and premillennialism.
15. God’s covenants with Abraham and David.
16. The Tribulation period and the varying views of the Rapture (Pretribulational, Midtribulational, Posttribulational).
17. The Millennium, populating the Millennial Kingdom, future judgments, resurrection, and eternal destiny.
18. Module 5: Theological Toolkit (Appendices & Tools)
19. Analysis of central passages for the study of theology.
20. Review of essential definitions for theological study.
